Why should I buy a slate for my hamster?

Does this mean I don't need to get my hamster's nails trimmed by a vet?

For most people this is the case. I have never had to have Flamey's claws trimmed at a vet and many of my customers have told me that they were on the verge of a vet visit before they got the slate. 

How do the slates work to keep hamster nails short?

These slates are flat and square so they are easy to lay down in your hamster's usual walkways. I tend to put them under Flamey's water and by his wheel because then he walks over them often. This has kept his nails at a great length. The slates will naturally wear down nails because they are a hard surface so when the nails come into contact with it, a little is worn down. It's just like using an emery board, but it's a much more gentle process because the slates are quite smooth.

What size will my hamster's slate be?

These slates are smaller than the XL versions so they're great for Roborovski hamsters or for smaller spaces in your hamster's enclosure. If you wanted to use them at the entrance of hides etc, they're a little easier to put in smaller spaces. The sizes I have at the moment are around 9cm long and 6cm wide.

Absolutely brilliant

I am so pleased to have found this slate stone available - they are such a good idea for placing in your little ones accommodation to naturally help wear their little nails down. I ordered the smaller one and it’s a really decent size. I originally decided to place it directly outside the house where my little one sleeps, but he was a little unsure of it, so I decided to move it to another area where he regularly goes and he was walking backwards and forwards over it straight away ☺️ The customer service that I received was amazing - our slate arrived very quickly and I was given lots of helpful advice. This slate is the only product that I’ve found available for helping to file little ones nails and I highly recommend one or more for all hamsters - I highly recommend Hamster Helper too 🙂
