Which substrates should I get?
If this is your new hamster and you don't know where to start, here's a brief outline of each substrate to help you make a decision:
Beech chips - Easy to care for and put in the cage, good for digging and foraging. Sprinkle food on them to encourage digging and foraging.
Aspen - Easy to care for, absorbent, good for digging or rest areas.
Hay - Great for foraging and mixing with dried flowers, foods and dried leaves to promote foraging. Great for stuffing toys.
Sand - If you have a Robo or a Dwarf sand is essential. Syrians enjoy it too. Good for promoting clean fur and digging. Easy to care for though some hammies use it as a toilet.
Soil - Most hamsters enjoy soil. Promotes digging and foraging. Cooling in summer as it is slightly damp. Requires a little more work to care for to avoid mould or drying.
Coco chips - good for digging. Pairs well with soil. Nice to add some texture to the cage.
If you don't choose substrates in the options box, I will send Aspen, Beech chips and Soil.
