A love letter to one of the most overlooked hamster species.

Chinese hamsters are often grouped together with dwarf hamsters, but they aren’t dwarf hamsters at all. They’re their own distinct species, with their own natural history, metabolism and feeding behaviours.

This complete Chinese hamster food has been formulated specifically for them. It combines grains, grass seeds, vegetables, leaves, herbs and several forms of animal protein in a varied, carefully balanced mix.

Because Chinese hamsters deserve food designed for Chinese hamsters.

This Chinese hamster food is made to order

This is one of our more specialist food mixes, so rather than keeping large quantities sitting on the shelf, it is freshly hand-mixed after you place your order.

Please allow up to 5 working days for your order to be dispatched. It will often be ready sooner, but during busy periods we may prepare several made-to-order foods together on a dedicated production day.

If you order other products at the same time, your complete order will be held and dispatched together once the food is ready.

Why is this food good for Chinese hamsters?

Chinese hamsters are often fed dwarf hamster food, but their needs and natural feeding behaviours sit somewhere between those of a Syrian and a dwarf hamster.

In the wild, Chinese hamsters inhabit semi-arid landscapes, dry grasslands, field margins and agricultural areas. Their natural diet can include grass seeds, grains, weeds, green plants, roots, vegetables and insects.

This formulation reflects that variety.

It contains grass seeds, but not as many as a Robo or dwarf mix; grains, but fewer than a typical Syrian formulation; and several forms of animal protein, balanced to suit an omnivorous hamster without allowing rich ingredients to dominate the food.

Chinese hamsters can be prone to diabetes, so the mix has been built around whole grains, seeds, vegetables and fibrous plant ingredients without relying on fruit or sugary treats.

It sits somewhere between Syrian and dwarf food, with a little sprinkle of Robo and it has been designed that way deliberately.

Food to stimulate your hamster

Chinese hamsters are active foragers and often spend more time searching for food than building enormous stores.

Different grains, grass seeds, vegetables, herbs, flowers and protein sources provide a wide range of scents, shapes and textures for your hamster to investigate.

Scatter feeding is recommended. It encourages natural foraging behaviour and turns dinner into an activity rather than something that disappears from a bowl in a few minutes.

Is the food mix safe for Chinese hamsters?

Yes. Every ingredient has been carefully researched and selected specifically with Chinese hamsters in mind.

This is a complete everyday food, not a diabetic treatment or a substitute for veterinary advice. If your hamster has diabetes or another medical condition, their diet should be discussed with an experienced vet.

And as always, I’ve left out ingredients I personally don’t feel comfortable feeding, including soya and raw legumes.

All food is pre-frozen and packed into sealed pouches as a precaution against pests. If you accidentally leave the pouch open or store it near non-frozen grains, simply reseal and freeze for 48 hours before use.

Feeding Guidelines

Feed approximately 1 - 2 teaspoons or 2 - 5g each day. Adjust the amount according to your hamster’s size, activity level and body condition.

Scatter feeding is recommended to encourage natural foraging behaviour.

Small food stores are normal. Check them regularly and only remove food that has become damp, soiled or spoiled.
