complete-senior-chinese-hamster-food-made-to-order
Complete Senior Chinese Hamster Food – Made to Order

A gentler love letter to one of the most overlooked hamster species.

Chinese hamsters are often grouped together with dwarf hamsters, but they aren’t dwarf hamsters at all. They’re their own distinct species, with their own natural history, metabolism and feeding behaviours.

This complete Senior Chinese Hamster Food has been formulated specifically for older Chinese hamsters. It keeps the varied grains, grass seeds, vegetables, herbs and animal proteins found in the adult Chinese mix, but carefully rebalances them for a hamster who is beginning to slow down.

Because forgotten species deserve thoughtfully formulated senior food too.

This Senior Chinese Hamster Food is made to order

This is one of our more specialist food mixes, so rather than keeping large quantities sitting on the shelf, it is freshly hand-mixed after you place your order.

Please allow up to 5 working days for your order to be dispatched. It will often be ready sooner, but during busy periods we may prepare several made-to-order foods together on a dedicated production day.

If you order other products at the same time, your complete order will be held and dispatched together once the food is ready.

When should my Chinese hamster move onto senior food?

There isn’t one birthday when every Chinese hamster suddenly needs senior food.

I recommend looking at your hamster’s behaviour rather than relying only on their age. If they’re still extremely active, foraging enthusiastically and behaving much as they always have, they may not need a senior formulation yet.

Senior food becomes more appropriate when you begin to notice a genuine change in pace: less activity, more sleeping, slower foraging or the gradual slowing down that often comes with age.

The important thing is the hamster in front of you.

Why is this food good for senior Chinese hamsters?

Creating this mix required a lot of careful thought because there is very little nutritional guidance written specifically for older Chinese hamsters.

Rather than treating them as elderly dwarf hamsters, I started with the adult Chinese Hamster Food and adjusted its existing balance.

Protein and fat have been reduced gently to reflect the needs of a hamster who is becoming less active. Fibre has been increased to support the ageing digestive system, while the overall mix remains varied, nourishing and recognisably Chinese-hamster-shaped.

The formulation still contains animal protein from shrimp, chicken, black soldier fly larvae, crickets and mealworms, but the proportions have been adjusted. Chicken provides a softer protein option alongside smaller amounts of insects.

Whole grains, grass seeds, vegetables, leaves and herbs retain the variety of the adult food, while pumpkin, plantain, dandelion, burdock and chicory contribute additional plant material and fibre.

Chinese hamsters can be prone to diabetes, so the mix remains free from fruit and sugary treats. It is leaner than the adult formulation without becoming sparse or restrictive.

Your hamster still gets the ingredients, scents and textures they recognise—just balanced differently for their changing needs.

And as always, I’ve left out ingredients I personally don’t feel comfortable feeding, including soya and raw legumes.

Food to stimulate your hamster

Older Chinese hamsters may forage more slowly, but enrichment remains important throughout their lives.

Different grains, grass seeds, vegetables, herbs, flowers and protein sources provide a broad range of scents, shapes and textures for your hamster to investigate.

Scatter feeding is recommended wherever practical. Your hamster doesn’t have to forage quickly for the activity to remain worthwhile.

If reduced mobility makes scatter feeding difficult, food can also be placed closer to their nest or along familiar routes through the enclosure.

Is the food mix safe for Chinese hamsters?

Yes. Every ingredient has been carefully researched and selected specifically with Chinese hamsters in mind.

This food is designed for ageing Chinese hamsters whose activity has begun to decrease. It isn’t intended as a treatment for sudden lethargy, unexplained weight loss or other changes that could indicate illness.

A gradual change in pace can be a normal part of ageing, but sudden or significant changes should always be discussed with an experienced vet.

This is also a complete everyday food rather than a diabetic treatment. If your hamster has diabetes or another medical condition, their individual diet should be discussed with a vet.

All food is pre-frozen and packed into sealed pouches as a precaution against pests. If you accidentally leave the pouch open or store it near non-frozen grains, simply reseal and freeze for 48 hours before use.

Guaranteed Analysis (per 100g)

Crude Protein: 17.4%
Crude Fat: 6.2%
Crude Fibre: 11.4%

Feeding Guidelines

Feed approximately 1–2 teaspoons or 2–5g each day.
